In this 2 hour self-paced course, participants will learn some basic principles of organization of information, see some examples of various organization strategies, test a few curation tools, then have the opportunity to apply that knowledge to a project of their own.

Building Curated Collections for Student and Staff Use

 

Collecting tools for students to engage with is a great strategy for providing current, differentiated resources that students can engage with to activate or extend their learning. In this self-paced course, participants will learn some basic principles of organization of information, see some examples of various organization strategies, test a few curation tools, then have the opportunity to apply that knowledge to a project of their own. We’ll also discuss ways to develop learning activities for students that apply digital discovery and curation skills.

Welcome and Introduction

Module 1: Planning a Digital Collection

In this module, you'll learn what it means to mindfully curate a collection of resources, then start pulling together items for your own curated collection.

Module 2: Evaluating Your Collection

In this module, you'll learn about curating resources for student use and evaluating those for quality and rigor.

Module 3: Formatting and Sharing Your Collection

In this module, you'll learn that there are a number of tools you can use to share your links and resources with your students, from a simple list of hyperlinks in a document to online account-based sharing tools to stunning virtual galleries.

Module 4: Extension

In this module, you'll discuss what skills could you practice or reinforce by having students create their own curated collections of resource and which topics, units, or lessons could be incorporated.

Final Reflection and Connection

In this module, you'll complete the final reflection and connection for this course. Good luck!
